Dark Star by Madeline Lowe Puccioni

Eighty year old AVA is ill and lonely and she wants to join her dear departed MAXIE, as they’d fantasized — as “twin stars”in the night sky. She has a plan: 23 Vicodin and a bottle of vodka.   But what if she goes through with “it” and he’s not there?  What if she must wander around in the dark, forever, searching for him?   What if the armed burglar who’s been robbing old people in her building wants to help?

Meet your Playwright:

Madeline Puccioni is a “re-entry” playwright, delighted to be back at her real work after grading English 1A essays  for 30 years.  Recently  she’s had a number of short plays produced in S.F.,  Oakland, NYC, L.A . and Australia.   In April 2016, her play, THE SATURDAY NIGHTERS, was part of a hit show, IN RESPONSE, at her L.A. theatre home, Towne Street Theatre, L.A..  In January 2017,  COOLEY’S REEL was up and dancin’  for  THE the ACTORS’ THEATRE SANTA CRUZ’  8X8 @ 10 Festival and again, in April 2017, in CITY LIGHTS NEW PLAYS SERIES, along with her  one-act, GERTRUDE. ( Yes. THAT Gertrude.)   She  is now an Associate Artist with THOSE WOMEN PRODUCTIONS, who included two of her plays  in their February 2017 show, ESCAPE VELOCITY.   She is   a company member in three other Bay Area theatres — PlayGround SF,  ReproRights Theatre  and PlayLand Productions.  Her DARK STAR will light up THE ROAD THEATRE in their Summer Playwrights Festival in early August,  Later in August,  her DONNELLEY’S PUB  will host a battle for subject/verb agreement and survival in a full production for PEGASUS THEATRE’S TAPAS FESTIVAL.  Her NO LONGER A TEN will  tweek some trumpery in SWAMPLAND in the SF Fringe in September.  She’s  a Board Member of PlayCafe,  and is working on a Musical with Composer Jeff Dunn.  Madeline lives in Oakland with her handsome husband Monroe, and her insane Rat Terrier, KiKi.  She’s having way too much fun.

Meet your Director:

Jacob Smith is an award winning writer/director from Iowa. He has been directing plays and films in LA for the last 10 years.  He recently assistant directed Edward Albee’s The Play About the Baby at The Road, and directed the award-winning, sold-out run of a choose your own adventure murder play called, Three Can Keep a Secret. Other Los Angeles directing credits include: The Birthday Boys by Aaron Kozak, 25 Plays Per Hour, Landscaping the Den of Saints (Which he also wrote), Boy Gets Girl By Rebecca Gilman, and Ligature Marks by Mac Rogers.
