DESCRIPTION
It is the summer of 1962, and Jackie Robinson is about to be the first black player inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame. That has a surprising impact on Junior Murphy, a black diner employee who can’t get a promotion, and whose little sister has her own history-making plans for the weekend. When a Midwest minor-leaguer comes to town chasing his idol, a collision of race, family, love, and baseball turns a sleepy New York town upside down.

While navigating the world of medically-assisted fertility she quickly learns that family can come to you in the most unconventional of ways. A new musical about the changing make-up of the American family. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Smoke and Mirrors is now playing at the Road on Lankershim:
5108 Lankershim Blvd
North Hollywood CA 91601

Named “Critic’s Choice” by the Los Angeles Times as “a superb theatrical magic show,” Smoke and Mirrors—a heartfelt comedy-drama with mind-bending magic—extends at The Road on Lankershim in the historic Lankershim Arts Center in North Hollywood.

As of March 3, 2013, Smoke and Mirrors is the “Critique of the Week” at Bitter Lemons.

The LA Weekly raves, If you’ve forgotten the childlike joy and sublime wonderment of seeing magic performed, Albie Selznick’s theatrical show is an enchanting reminder. The accomplished actor-magician puts on a bewildering tour de force that has more “how did he do that” flashes than can be counted! GO!

Backstage says, Smoke and Mirrors is about magic, wonder, and spectacle. You’ll leave feeling spellbound by Selznick’s display, scratching your head and thinking, “How did he do that?”

Created by and starring noted actor Albie Selznick (Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Dexter, etc.) and Magician (a lifetime member of Hollywood’s Magic Castle), Smoke and Mirrors is a semi-autobiographical fantastical coming-of-age story about a boy who uses magic to escape reality and face the world after the death of his father.

Questions? Call: 310-450-2849

Smoke and Mirrors is a poignant yet humorous play packed with magic tricks, elaborate illusions, special effects, improv, audience participation, and spooky Houdini seances. Selznick takes the audience on his healing journey while enlisting the assistance of Trix (a life-sized rabbit), The Oracle (a giant talking orb), and Bessie Houdini, who makes a rather startling appearance!

Written and Performed by Albie Selznick. Directed by Paul Millet. Produced by Michelle Grant. Co-produced by Danielle Gautier and Bettina Zacar.

Production Manger: Set, Lighting, Sound and Prop Designed by Bettina Zacar.

EACH HALLOWEEN SEASON for the past nine years the Rolling Darkness Revue, a traveling fraternity of some of horror fiction’s premier talents, has presented an evening of new supernatural stories in celebration of the genre’s favorite holiday.

A multi-media experience which incorporates theatrical lighting and live music to illuminate and enhance the Halloween tradition of ghost story readings, the Revue was founded in 2004 by Dennis Etchison, Glen Hirshberg, and Peter Atkins and has been curated by Atkins & Hirshberg since 2006.

The Revue began performing in bookstores, libraries, and parking lots, making the move to small theatres in 2009 as the show grew in nature (and audience). As well as becoming a much-anticipated October ritual for fans and readers, RDR has received glowing notices from, among others, the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition.

Stories which have premiered at the Revue have many times been selected for inclusion in annual ‘Year’s Best’ anthologies from such noted editors as Ellen Datlow, Stephen Jones, and Paula Guran, as well as finding homes in magazines like Cemetery Dance, PostScripts, and The Milan Review.

Guest authors over the life of the show have included such genre and mainstream notables as Norman Partridge, Nancy Holder, Aimee Bender, Michael Blumlein, and Kim Newman. Live music for shows outside LA has been provided by various artists, while the LA shows are blessed by the eerie tonalities of noted local ambient musicians Jonas Yip & Rex Flowers.

PETER ATKINS: Author of Morningstar, Big Thunder, Moontown, and the movies Wishmaster and Hellraiser II-IV. “Atkins is a brilliant supplier of shudders and splendors” – Clive Barker. “Writes with elegance and wit” – The Times (London).

GLEN HIRSHBERG: Award-winning author of The Two Sams, The Snowman’s Children, and American Morons. “A writer to watch and treasure” – Peter Straub. “Stories as unsettling as they are scary, as disturbing as they are profound” – Los Angeles Times.

Welcome to Our 3rd Annual Summer Playwrights Festival

A Fundraising Event for the Road Theatre Company

$15 suggested donation at the door. No reservations. First come, first seated.

Following our mission of finding and developing new works for the American stage, we present a surprising collection of full-length and one-act plays for your enjoyment and consideration.

Between August 5th and 12th, you will have the opportunity to hear a total of 22 new works from 22 playwrights directed and performed by Road company members and a wonderful group of guest artists including Emmy, Golden Globe, Ovation and other award winners. In addition, the festival includes live music, food and drink, and a perfect opportunity for you to discuss the work with the artists in relaxed and informal post-reading talk-backs and soirees.

Some of this year’s offerings are being considered for the Road’s mainstage while others will go to our Off-Road Series or to be further developed as part of our Road Signs Monday night reading series. We welcome your opinions. We also deeply appreciate any donation you can make to help the Road continue its award-winning work as we begin our 22nd season of presenting new works to Los Angeles audiences.

Funding a theatre is a daunting challenge and never more so than at the present time. The donation you make will help us to continue to bring the power of theatre to our community and to make our 22nd season a reality as we expand into our second space — a 77-seat, first of its kind in the nation professional theatre — inside the NoHo Senior Arts Colony in spring 2013. So thank you, enjoy yourselves, give freely, and our members and staff will answer any questions you may have about becoming a Road subscriber or about any of our upcoming programming.

Sincerely,

Taylor Gilbert – Founder and Artistic Director

Sam Anderson – Artistic Director
