"Gideon Paul Doyle has disappeared. As his story unfolds we meet his mother, Lillian (Taylor Gilbert); his sister, June (Deana Barone); and a family acquaintance, Nathan (Sam Anderson). Through their interconnected yet standalone monologues, Rogers effectively threads his three characters together even though each occupies a different time period in this tale. Gilbert plays the erudite wife of a now-dead genius economist. Her taking "great comfort in routine" and having an endless bank account make possible world travel full of boundless cultural experiences for her children. Barone plays the daughter left to struggle with endless "whys" when Paul, their mother's admitted favorite, leaves. Anderson, in a particularly engaging performance, plays a former colleague of Lillian's husband to whom she turns for carnal pleasure throughout the years. Under Fox's direction, this trio presents a choreographed tapestry full of plot twists and revelations. "

"JT Rogers’ Madagascar looks at the effect of this disappearance on three of the people closest to him. Densely written, told almost entirely through monologs, Madagascar is a smart play that requires smarts from its audience. Fortunately, its superb staging by The Road Theatre Company makes Madagascar an accessible, compelling theatrical adventure. Brendon Fox’s direction and performances by Road Co-Artistic Directors Sam Anderson and Taylor Gilbert and Road member Deana Barone are awesome indeed. Anderson...does bravura work as a man tortured by guilt...The ever luminous Gilbert is simply and subtly stupendous in her work here...Barone’s work is thrilling and heartbreaking in equal measure."

"This disturbingly dark, and dauntingly complex play had the audience united in a hypnotic trance, from start to finish...The trio of performances are breathtakingly brilliant, and the focused direction of Brendon Fox is mesmerizing."
